Fernandina Beach Sunrise Session
A Kid-Free Weekend Trip with Katie and Andrew
Fernandina Beach, Florida
Kid-free weekend!! Joseph and I drove up to the Fernandina Beach on Friday afternoon for our very first kid-free weekend since having kids. We met our friends Katie and Andrew there, and while we love our kids, it was so refreshing to have uninterrupted conversations and no nap or eating schedules to follow. We arrived to a beachfront Airbnb right as a thunderstorm was rolling in, so we spent the first hour of our trip napping — it was obviously our only choice. Luckily the rain slowed down enough for us to enjoy dinner outside with a waterfront view, and we spent the remainder of that first night playing board games and resting up for a busy Saturday.
Even though we were on vacation, we all woke up before the sun to do a beach photo session — Katie and Andrew are the best for agreeing to do this! There was hardly anyone else around and the light veil of clouds perfectly diffused the morning sun for the first 30 minutes of the day. Then we went to breakfast at a local diner, where we found the most perfectly salty, drool-worthy breakfast potatoes.
We headed back to the house and spent the next five hours on the beach. The time seemed to fly by. While everyone swam in the ocean, I was able to finish reading a book (I’m not a big fan of water) and attempt to even out the tan lines on my feet — sadly, my feet are still two different colors. We went for a long walk and found some shells to take back home as souvenirs for the kids.
We made our way to downtown Fernandina to shop, play mini golf, and have dinner. Joseph even got a hole-in-one on the very last hole! We went for another long walk and got ice cream for dessert. At last, we went back at the Airbnb with to end the night with games, laughter, and good conversation.
For the first time in a very long time, Joseph and I slept in past 6am on Sunday morning. We packed up our bags and spent an hour reading on the porch as the sun came out. We went to Mass at the cutest little church that we found on the way home, and had one last lunch by ourselves before returning home.
We packed in so many things during our short trip, yet it felt so relaxing. I loved the short break from our regular daily life, but it’s nice to be back home. It was the perfect little weekend getaway for us!
Katie and Andrew, we had so much fun! We’ll have to do a trip like this again in the future. And thank you, Andrew, for snapping a few photos of Joseph and me!
